Happy Social Work Month! 


I’m always happy to see social workers getting recognized, because sometimes I get the sense that we are largely overlooked. A question I once got from a nurse friend, “What do you, like, do all day?” made me realize that the general public really isn’t aware of all the important things we do as social workers. While I’m always trying to come up with a streamlined, professional answer to that question, all I can come up with is, “Whatever needs to be done”. While I’m not quite literally doing whatever needs to be done (I draw the line at giving client’s rides), I think social workers out there can relate to this sentiment. More often than not we are expected to do tasks that aren’t in our job description, and we make it work.


I’d like to thank all the social workers and social workers in training for keeping people afloat during the past two years of the pandemic, as we have collectively faced so many challenges and new situations. Navigating these “unprecedented times” has also allowed us to discover new skills and improvise the way we do certain things. I know over at APS, we have had countless documentation changes, hybrid home visits, and rotate covering for COVID exposed co-workers. 


I want to encourage everyone reading this to take care of themselves. I know personally how incredibly difficult the past two years have been on my mental health, and I also know that others are experiencing the same. So, I want you all to book that trip you put off, use your sick time, and do something you enjoy. We do not have to put work first when our work does not give us the same courtesy. 


And ask for a raise while you’re at it, what’s the worst that could happen?
